Las Vegas Aces star Liz Cambage penned an impassioned personal story in The Players’ Tribune on Sunday, describing her battles with depression and anxiety and how it has affected her playing career in the WNBA.

“My mental health played a role in my decision on where to play this year,” Cambage wrote.

Cambage was traded from Dallas to Las Vegas over the offseason. She said that she wanted to be closer to her family on the West Coast after Wings’ head coach Fred Williams was fired.

“I knew that my support there was gone,” Cambage wrote.

The 27-year-old is a three-time All-Star and led the league in scoring last year. She admitted that her mental health has kept her from the court at times:

First, on Saturday against the Wings, and then again on Monday against the Mystics. I took a DNP-Rest….. but here’s the truth of what it should have said:

DNP-Mental Health.

Cambage wrote about how the All-Star festivities in Las Vegas took a toll on her, and that she had an anxiety attack after struggling in the first game after the break.

She called on the WNBA to have the same access to the new NBA policy that requires every team to have a mental health professional on staff. Cambage believes that everybody should have access to mental healthcare.

“But at the same time, I won’t lie — it’s disappointing to me that we’re praising anyone for “progress,” when so many women are being excluded from it,” Cambage wrote. “I mean….. doesn’t the WNBA deserve this same program?”
