Liz Astrof Sibling Comedy ‘Co-Dependents’ In Works At NBC

EXCLUSIVE: NBC is developing Co-Dependents, a multi-camera comedy written and executive produced by Pivoting creator Liz Astrof. The project is executive produced by Dana Honor and comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Honor’s Defining Eve Productions is under a deal.

Set in a middle-class town on Long Island, Co-Dependents follows a 30-something brother and sister have gotten older but haven’t really grown up. Childhood rituals and their commitment to each other always take first place over spouses, jobs and kids.

The project is inspired by Astrof’s relationship with her brother, Jeff Astrof.

The two accomplished comedy writers have been supportive of each other. Jeff Astrof left the following comment on a 2017 Deadline story about a Liz Astrof multi-cam comedy landing a put pilot commitment at CBS: “Finally, an Astrof does something of quality! Kill it, Liz!! love, your brother.”

Liz Astrof went on to serve as consulting producer on the two comedy series co-created/executive produced by Jeff Astrof over the past seven years, NBC’s Trial & Error and Starz’s Shining Vale.

She created and served as showrunner on the 2022 Fox comedy series Pivoting. On Pivoting, Shining Vale and several development projects, including the aforementioned CBS sitcom, Liz Astrof worked with Honor while the latter was an executive at Kapital Entertainment.

The 2023-24 development cycle was significantly delayed by the strikes. With the time frame dramatically shrunk and the networks’ 2024-25 lineups already partially filled by new 2023-24 series that have been pushed, there have been few sales, with a lot of the development geared toward midseason 2025 and beyond.

Co-Dependents fits into NBC’s push for multi-camera comedies launched over a year ago.

Liz Astrof most recently served as executive producer and showrunner on ABC’s 2023 comedy pilot Public Defenders, which starred Anthony Anderson. Previously, she served as a key writer-producer on 2 Broke Girls and was a co-executive producer on The Conners. Astrof, whose book, Don’t Wait Up: Confessions of a Stay-at-Work Mom was published in 2019, is repped by CAA and Artists First.
