The king of tiebreakers made Novak Djokovic the king of Wimbledon.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic defeated second-seeded Roger Federer in a historic final with a 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12 victory for his fifth Wimbledon title. Djokovic won all three tiebreakers in the match.

It’s the 48th meeting between the two and 16th in a Grand Slam event — the most in the Open era. Djokovic now leads the overall series 26-22, including 10-6 in majors and 3-1 at Wimbledon.

Djokovic wins fifth-set tiebreaker 7-3

Federer hits long on the first point, but hits a baseline winner to make it 1-1. Djokovic gets a mini break by winning the next point for a 2-1 lead and he serves twice. Djokovic takes both points on his serve for a 4-1 lead, putting the pressure on Federer to respond. Djokovic falls on a rally as Federer cuts the lead to 4-2 as they change sides. Federer hits an excellent second serve to cut his deficit to 4-3 with Djokovic serving the next two points. Djokovic hits a forehand winner for a 5-3 lead, and a spectacular backhand winner from Djokovic gives him three match points. Djokovic took the next point to win his fifth Wimbledon title.

Djokovic 12, Federer 12 (Sets are 2-2)

Federer serving. Djokovic is upset after missing a shot on the first point and gets a conduct violation warning. Federer easily wins the next three points to win the game and force the fifth-set tiebreaker.

Djokovic 12, Federer 11 (Sets are 2-2)

Djokovic serving. Djokovic opens with a backhand winner and a forehand that can’t be returned by Federer to take a quick 30-0 lead. The lead grew to 40-0 before Djokovic hit a backhand wide to make it 40-15. Federer responds with a forehand winner and an overhead volley to rally from 0-40 down to force deuce. A long rally follows as Federer hits a forehand winner that lands right on the line (it was reviewed) for a break point, but a Federer backhand just went wide to make it deuce again. A strong serve can’t be returned by Federer, giving Djokovic the advantage, but Federer responds with a volley at the net for deuce. Federer hits another shot on the line (Djokovic loses the challenge) but Djokovic wins the next point for deuce again. Federer hits long on the next two points as Djokovic gets a gutsy hold. Federer has to win on his serve to force the tiebreaker.

Federer serving. Djokovic takes the first point, but Federer responds by taking the next four points, including a running volley winner, for the victory. One more service game for each player and we could have a historic tiebreaker.

Djokovic serving. Djokovic wins the first point, but a wide backhand makes it 15-15. A 121-mph serve can’t be returned by Federer on the next point, but Djokovic then hits a forehand long to make it 30-30. Then a big second serve from Djokovic can’t be returned by Federer, and Djokovic uses a big first serve to win the game.

Federer serving. Federer starts with his 24th ace of the match. A Federer forehand just missed (it was challenged) to make it 15-15, but another big serve gives Federer a 30-15 lead. Djokovic tried a lob off Federer’s serve-and-volley but it was long, and a wide backhand by Djokovic closes out the game.

Djokovic goes on to win the next two points before Federer wins one with an easy volley to make it 40-15. Djokovic then hits the net and the ball goes out on a backhand after a long rally as Federer closes the gap to 40-30. But a strong serve by Djokovic ends the game.

Federer serving. A BREAK! With a chance to serve for the match, Federer hits long on the first point and trails 0-15. Djokovic returns the favor on the next point with a mishit after a long rally. A pair of aces then give Federer two match points. Federer hits a forehand wide on his first match point, and Djokovic saves the second with a beautiful forehand winner to make it deuce. Federer then can’t return a Djokovic forehand as Djokovic earns a break point, and Djokovic breaks on the next point when Federer hits into the net.

Djokovic dives to hit a winner on the next point to avoid two break points and even it at 30-30. Djokovic takes a 40-30 lead, and a long Federer shot gives Djokovic the game and another must-hold for Federer.

Federer serving. Djokovic takes the first point as Federer hits a backhand volley into the net. Djokovic hits a backhand into the net on the next point to make it 15-15. An ace on the line gives Federer a 30-15 lead, but a backhand into the net evens it at 30-30. Federer avoids a match point with a volley winner, and a wide Djokovic forehand evens the match at 5-5.

Federer serving. A BREAK! After saving three break points in his last service game, Federer quickly falls behind 0-30 after a couple of loose backhands. But a ripping backhand pass by Djokovic on the second one give him the break.
