Meet the artist: Larry Whitler

The Friends of Silver Springs State Park is hosting a “meet the artist” event with artist Larry Whitler from 2-4 p.m. July 8 at the Silver Springs State Park Welcome Center, 5656 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Silver Springs. “The Art of Artist Larry Whitler” is on display at the Welcome Center until mid-August. The event is free, but Silver Springs State Park charges $2 per person to enter the park.

“Larry Whitler, an artist with over 60 years of artistic expertise in the mediums of watercolor, oil, pastel, acrylic, charcoal, and most recently digital art, brings every painting he creates to life, each reflecting their own emotion,” according to a news release announcing the event. He has lived and worked in Marion County since 1972.

Fleetwood Mac tribute band

History lecture: The maritime heritage of Florida

Joe Knetsch, historian and author, will lecture on the maritime heritage of Florida, including the history of St. Johns and Ocklawaha rivers, at 2 p.m. July 16 at Green Clover Hall, 319 SE 26th Terrace, Ocala. Reception to follow at the nearby Marion County Museum of History & Archaeology. Admission is free for members, $5 for nonmembers.

The Florida Cracker Cowboys

This group will perform as part of the Will McLean Foundation’s Sunday Sampler Concert Series. The show begins at 2 p.m. July 16 in the historic Dunnellon Depot, 12061 S. Williams St., Dunnellon. Donation is $15 (cash preferred) at the door.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’

This film will be screened at 1 p.m. July 23 at the Marion Theatre, 50 S. Magnolia Ave., Ocaola. Tickets $5. This film is shown in partnership with Marion County Animal Services. There will be a special adoption unit outside of the theater from 1-3 p.m.

‘The Unscene South’

This exhibit will be up at the Appleton Museum of Art through Jan. 28. “A little-known population of Blacks lived free in the United States, long before Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery,” the museum says on its website. “Through Charles Eady’s paintings, ‘The Unscene South’ shares evidence and details of their existence, and presents opportunities to view the realities of their daily lives, seeking to eliminate many misconceptions about Blacks and the South.”

'Caught Up in History and Captured on Film: Randy Batista’s Photographs of Florida and Cuba'

This exhibit is up through Jan. 28 at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. Gainesville-based photographer Randy Batista "uses his lens to document his life and travel adventures," the Appleton says in a news release. "Comprised of silver-gelatin prints developed from film, the images in this show focus on Florida and Cuba — two places that have had a profound impact on the artist. Having lived in both locations, the artist’s awareness of place, time and cultural heritage are evident in his quiet but alluring street photography, landscapes and portraits." ‘Bold and Inspired: Native American Regalia’ by Diana Lee and ‘Abstract Island Expressions’ by William Lee

Tony A. Blue, American Painter’

This show “explores Blue’s expressionist, abstract paintings,” which are “inspired by Florida’s tropical natural landscape,” the city says in a news release. The exhibit is free and open to the public. RETRO/NEW | David D’Alessandris, ‘50 Years in the Life of an Artist’

This art exhibit is up through July 8 at The Brick City Center for the Arts, 23 SW Broadway St., Ocala. The center is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free admission.

‘Gross Out’

The Discovery Center’s newest exhibit is up through Aug. 26. The center, 701 NE Sanchez Ave., Ocala, is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

“Science can be fun, but also gross,” the City of Ocala said in a news release. “This new exhibit will address some of the grossest science subjects, such as what blood is made of, how loud a burp is and the identification of animals by their waste. Visitors will explore the world of creepy crawlies, gross smells and stinky science.”

Summer Spotlight XXVI

The Visual Artists’ Society presents this show, “which showcases the work of local and regional artists in a wide variety of mediums,” according to organizers. It is up at the College of Central Florida Webber Gallery through July 20. The gallery is located at the CF Ocala campus, 3001 SW College Road. The gallery is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
