Gargoyles is getting the live-action treatment thanks to Gary Dauberman and James Wan, the team behind the Annabelle franchise, The Hollywood Reporter points out.
The original animated Gargoyles was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and ran for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. Centered on a group of statues who come to life after being moved from Scotland to New York City, the series was part of a darker run of animated Disney shows shows in the late ’90s, including Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men.
Dauberman, who wrote all three of the Annabelle films and directed its final installment Annabelle Comes Home, will write, executive produce, and run the Gargoyles spinoff, while Wan and Michael Clear will executive produce through their company Atomic Monster, which helmed that franchise and the more recent smash M3GAN. The spinoff is said to be in the early stages of development and will stream on Disney+.
News of a Gargoyles reboot comes after Doug creator Jim Jinkins revealed he was working on his own revival of the Nickelodeon series for Disney. That sequel, dubbed Doug Kids, would remain animated, but center on a grown up version of the titular character, now married with children.
