Big Little Lies star Reese Witherspoon is adapting another hit book but this time, the outing will be a big screen affair.

The actor, who appeared opposite Kerry Washington in Amazon Prime Video's acclaimed drama series Little Fires Everywhere, has acquired the rights to develop Delia Owen's murder mystery Where The Crawdads Sing.

Released in 2018, the novel centres on Kya, a young woman who was forced to raise herself alone on the North Carolina marshes when her family abandoned her. Now a successful author, Kya is accused of murdering her former boyfriend, a beloved member of the town she now lives in.

Having been recommended by Witherspoon, just a few weeks after its publication, as part of her book club, it topped the New York Times bestsellers list and remained Amazon's most popular fiction book throughout 2019.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be "both a crime thriller and a coming-of-age tale that intertwines two timelines."

Olivia Newman (First Match) is on board to direct, while Oscar-winning Beasts of the Southern Wild writer Lucy Alibar has been lined up to pen the script.

Witherspoon will produce alongside her Hello Sunshine partner Lauren Neustadter.
