Cornell’s rendition of Cash’s poem appears on the upcoming Johnny Cash: Forever Words

A posthumous recording of Chris Cornell performing Johnny Cash’s “You Never Knew My Mind” has been released. Listen below and also find a video of Cornell discussing the recording. The track appears on the upcoming album Johnny Cash: Forever Words, which is due out April 6 (via Legacy Recordings). The LP is composed of adaptations of Cash’s poems, previously collected in a book of the same name. Kacey Musgraves, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, the Jayhawks, Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, and more are also contributed to the record.

In 1996, Johnny Cash covered one of Chris Cornell’s songs for his album Unchained: He sang “Rusty Cage” from Soundgarden’s 1991 album Badmotorfinger.
