Kevin Costner has kept fans on the edge of their seats about his possible return to the second half of Season 5 for Yellowstone. After his exit last summer due to scheduling conflicts over his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, the 69-year-old actor has flip-flopped about his participation in the hit Paramount+ series.

Now, all eyes are focused on the spin-off that is supposed to star Matthew McConaughey, but now, rumors are heating up around another A-list actress. The reported tea, spilled by the Daily Caller, revealed that the 65-year-old actress will be the big name headlining creator Taylor Sheridan’s next series, tentatively titled 2024. This shift apparently occurred because McConaughey and the studio executives are not in agreement over his alleged “2.5 million-per-episode fee,” per Life & Style.

“Michelle is primed for big, big things and the mood is the franchise will go a different route and embrace girl power and move with the times,” a source told the outlet. This new twist in the Yellowstone franchise saga also makes sense as Hollywood studios tighten their production budgets after a pandemic and two strikes over the last four years — it’s possible that McConaughey talked himself out of the job.

This dramatic turn of events might create an easy path for Pfeiffer to sign that contract and take over the lead for the first series in a modern-day version of Yellowstone. There have been two prequels so far, 1884 and 1923. “She’s excited and ready to go,” the insider revealed. “Word is, she’s very close to a deal and she really wants to do this, unlike her indecisive male counterparts. Her casting would be a refreshing welcome!”

Where does that leave McConaughey and Costner? “Matthew’s stalling could really cost him, and he still hasn’t inked a deal. Kevin’s return isn’t set in stone either — and he’s only going to get a cameo at best, thanks to his hardline tactics, so the coast is clear for Michelle to take over!” The next chapter might be “the juicy role that has eluded her for years,” but it’s also “a loss” for Costner and McConaughey. It’s tough out there on the Yellowstone ranch.
