Lindsey Vonn's The Pack Canceled amid Controversy Over Video of Dogs in Seemingly Dangerous Situation

The Pack, an Amazon Prime Video competition series hosted by Lindsey Vonn, has been canceled after one season.

The reality show centered around dog owners and their pets traveling around the world to compete in various challenges, will not be moving ahead with a second season, PEOPLE can confirm.

A representative for Vonn and Amazon did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

News of the cancellation comes after unaired footage leaked from the editing room floor showed dogs being put in seemingly dangerous situations.

The videos, which were published by The Wrap in December, showed several dogs dangling from a harness as their owners rappelled down a waterfall.

At one point, the animals — including what appears to be a senior dog — seem to struggle to find their footing as they come into contact with the rocks.

The footage was condemned by animal rights group PETA, who, in a statement to The Wrap at the time, accused producers of putting dogs "into one dangerous situation after another for the sake of ratings."

However, a source with knowledge of the production tells PEOPLE that the decision not to pursue a second season was not due to PETA complaints, but more so the reality of overall traveling during the pandemic.

Another studio source tells PEOPLE: "There is no connection between PETA and the show not coming back."

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Wednesday, PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange says, "Dogs rely on us for everything, including their protection, and anyone who cares about them can breathe a sigh of relief now that The Pack won't be dangling any more dogs over waterfalls."

"PETA urges anyone who sees an animal being used for a film or television show to report it immediately—just like the kind person who blew the whistle on this detached-from-reality show," Lange continues.

Mark LeBlanc and his border collie Ace won the first season of The Pack. The mechanical engineer from Salt Lake City, Utah, and his canine companion received $500,000 for themselves and $250,000 to donate to the charity of their choice

"As a society, we can do better. Right now, we are just killing animals that are in the way," LeBlanc recently told PEOPLE on why he gave the donation Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare organization with a sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

"I hope dog owners realize that your relationship with your dog doesn't have to be a friendship of convenience," LeBlanc said. "It can be part of your lifestyle."
