While the arthouse world is focused on Toronto and Venice this weekend, the indie box office did have some business thanks to Greenwich’s “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which was released on seven screens this weekend.
The music documentary about the famed singer grossed $115,500 for a per screen average of $16,500. It’s another solid opening for Greenwich, which released “Echo in the Canyon” earlier this summer with $3.3 million from a maximum of 147 screens. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman — makers of last year’s Oscar-nominated short doc “End Game” — “The Sound of My Voice” has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%.
Among holdovers, Roadside Attractions’ “The Peanut Butter Falcon” is continuing to do well in targeted release, grossing $2.2 million from 1,310 screens this weekend after grossing $3 million last weekend. The Sundance film now has $12.2 million after 2 wide weekends.
Fox Searchlight’s “Ready or Not” did not hold as well, falling a steep 70% to $2.2 million from 2,560 screens to give the horror film $25.6 million after three weekends. Amazon’s “Brittany Runs a Marathon” added $1 million from 230 screens in its third weekend, bringing its total to $1.9 million prior to its wide expansion next weekend.
Finally, A24’s “The Farewell” grossed $455,271 in its ninth weekend to bring its total to $16.7 million. A24 released a special version of the film with Mandarin subtitles in 40 cities this weekend to allow Chinese immigrant families to enjoy it together.
