The second part of Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer” Season 2 battled against titles from Disney+, Peacock, Apple TV+ and Paramount+ to win the top spot in the latest Wrap Report.

The David E. Kelly legal drama, based on novels by Michael Connelley, owes part of its success to Netflix’s unique two-part release model with part one debuting on July 6 and the second released close to a month later on Aug. 3, letting it dominate streaming viewing for the week of July 31-Aug. 6.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.

New data from Samba TV found that almost three-quarters, or 72%, of U.S. adults identify as binge-watchers, and those viewers turned out for the 2023 slate of bingeable shows. Shows with two-part drops like “The Lincoln Lawyer” drove an average retention rate of 39%, higher than the 35% average retention rate of shows released weekly. This successful two-part release model strategy has already brought Netflix success with the season four premieres of “Stranger Things” and “Ozark” and the debut of “Harry & Meghan” as well.

Holding ground in the top 10 for another week was another two-part Netflix release, “The Witcher,” which dropped from No. 4 in the prior week to No. 7 in the most recent week. On the flip side, action movie “Hidden Strike” and rom-com “Happiness Is for Beginners,” both from Netflix, climbed the charts, with “Hidden Strike” moving from fifth to second place for the week and “Happiness is for Beginners” going from seventh to fourth. Rounding out the list for Netflix was the latest season of “Sweet Magnolias,” which dropped nine spots, indicating the bulk release of all 10 episodes may have had viewers gobble it up at a fast clip.

Disney+ also made a splash at No. 3 with over 1.3 million U.S. households tuning in to the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debut over its first five days on the streamer. By comparison, 482,000 U.S. households rented or bought the third installment in the Marvel franchise over the first five days it was released on video-on-demand across services like Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV+, Vudu, and others. Gen Z and younger Millennials (ages 25-34) overindexed by the highest margin for the Disney+ debut.

Another big movie premiere on streaming in the week was “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” on Peacock, with 811,000 U.S. households tuning in over the first four days. The movie, based on the beloved Nintendo franchise, fared best with young Millennial households overindexing at 17%. Meanwhile, originals like Apple TV+’s “Hijack” and Paramount+’s “Special Ops: Lioness” saw strong viewership for the week, coming in at sixth and eighth respectively.

On broadcast television, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” found itself atop the chart for the third consecutive week, with a second Sunday night show coming in at No. 8. “American Ninja Warrior” was No. 3 for the week, giving NBC the top two spots and three in the top 10.

ABC’s game shows and reality competitions rounded out the rest of the top five, with “The Bachelorette” at No. 2, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” coming in fourth and “Celebrity Family Feud” coming in fifth. “Wheel of Fortune” episodes landed three spots in the chart, giving ABC six of the top 10 shows. CBS snagged seventh place with “Big Brother.”
