Lin-Manuel Miranda Animated Feature 'Vivo' on Its Way to Theaters
One of the key ingredients to Moana was Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music. The Hamilton star and creator created, alongside Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i, one of the best Disney musicals in recent years.
Now Sony Animation wants in, so it will be releasing Vivo in 2020. Miranda wrote the movie six years ago for DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks was interested in his work based on the success of In the Heights, Miranda’s critically acclaimed musical that predates Hamilton.
Deadline reports Vivo is about a capuchin monkey who loves music and attempts a dangerous journey from Havana to Miami. Why has it taken so long to be greenlit? Mostly because it was stuck in development purgatory, but with the success of Moana, it’s all systems go.
Miranda shared the news on Twitter:
I wrote these tunes for Vivo years ago. So thrilled they’ve found a home at @SonyAnimation and I get to play with Quiara again. https://t.co/Sni9JoAcGs
