Lily-Rose Depp, Hoyeon and Renate Reinsve to Star in Joe Talbot’s ‘The Governesses’ for A24

Lily-Rose Depp, Hoyeon and Renate Reinsve will star in Joe Talbot’s sophomore feature “The Governesses” for A24.

A24 has greenlit the project, with Talbot set to direct and Depp (“The Idol”), Screen Actors Guild Award winner Hoyeon (“Squid Game”) and Cannes best actress winner and BAFTA best actress nominee Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”) on board to star.

“The Governesses” marks Talbot’s second collaboration with the studio after his critically acclaimed feature debut “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The screenplay is by Talbot and poet-novelist Olivia Gatwood (“Life of the Party”).

Based on Anne Serre’s novel of the same name, the story follows three rebellious governesses who upend the household they work in –– inspiriting the minds of the boys in their care, igniting the imaginations of the bohemian couple who employ them and abandoning their charges for erotic adventures.

The project, which will be shot in Spain, was developed with the support of BBC Film, which will co-finance alongside A24. A24 will handle the the movie’s global release.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures will produce with Rob Richert of Talbot’s Longshot Features and Angus Lamont.

Fans of “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” have eagerly awaited Talbot’s next move after the budding filmmaker won the dramatic directing award at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and the movie nabbed the U.S. dramatic special jury award for creative collaboration. Talbot went on to earn a Directors Guild Award nomination in the first-time feature filmmaker category, as well as Independent Spirit Award nods for best first feature and the Someone to Watch award, plus three Gotham Award nominations (for best screenplay, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and the audience award).

News of the project comes amid a breakthrough year for Hoyeon and Reinsve, as well. Hoyeon, whose full name is Jung Ho-yeon, made her acting debut in Netflix’s “Squid Game” and her career has skyrocketed from there. Most recently, the Korean star nabbed a role in Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming Apple TV Plus thriller series “Disclaimer,” opposite Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The model-turned-actor also co-stars in The Weeknd’s brand-new music video “Out of Time.”

Reinsve has been a rising star in her native Norway for the last decade, but gained major international acclaim — and awards buzz — for her performance in Joachim Trier’s Oscar-nominated film “The Worst Person in the World.”

Depp, meanwhile, has built a wide-ranging resume since her 2014 film debut in “Tusk,” working with filmmaker Kevin Smith again in 2016’s “Yoga Hosers,” David Michôd (in 2019’s “The King,” with Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton and Ben Mendelsohn) and acting opposite such stars as Natalie Portman (“Planetarium”) or Colin Farrell and Tye Sheridan (“Voyagers”). Depp most recently starred in the 2021 TIFF selection “Wolf” and will next be seen in the HBO drama series “The Idol,” from The Weeknd and “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson.

Depp, Hoyeon and Reinsve are repped by CAA.
