Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone are set to headline a new take on the classic queer rom-com The Wedding Banquet.

Directed by Fire Island filmmaker Andrew Ahn, this version of the story stars Yang as Min, whose plans for the future are thrown into question when his boyfriend Chris rejects his spontaneous marriage proposal. Soon enough, he convinces his best friend Angela (played by Gladstone) to marry him instead, offering to pay for her partner Liz’s (Kelly Marie Tran) IVF treatments in exchange for his green card. However, their plans for a simple city hall ceremony are turned upside down when Min’s grandmother unexpectedly arrives from Seoul to throw him a lavish Korean wedding banquet. Filming is set to begin next month in Vancouver.

The original Wedding Banquet film, directed by Ang Lee of Brokeback Mountain fame, starred Winston Chao as a gay Taiwanese man living in New York City who acquiesces to his parents’ desire for him to have a traditional Chinese marriage by marrying a struggling artist looking for a green card before their plans for an extravagant banquet upend his plans.

Lee gave Ahn’s new film his blessing in a statement (per Indiewire), writing, “It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create.”

Ahn opened up about what The Wedding Banquet has meant to him over the years in an Instagram post, writing, “Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet was the first gay film I ever watched. It was the first time I saw a gay Asian character on screen.”

“It means so much to me to continue its legacy with such an incredible cast and team!” he added. “I’m so thankful for everyone helping to make this passion project happen!”
