Lately, Lil Yachty’s commentary on Hip-Hop has brought him more backlash than his actual music. This week, he drew the ire of internet users after rapping over a sample of “Feel It In The Air” by Beanie Sigel.

The “Strike (Holster)” rapper joined Brooklyn artist DontKallMeLuxxy on his new track “Sydney.” The record, produced by Mitchgonemad and Wessgonemad, revamps the classic 2005 record into a synth-heavy drill song.

“My doggy f**ked up, he’ll trade your codeine for a kidney/ Two fingers locked up, know they with me/ I was in Melbourne f**king on Sydney/ If it’s smoke, it’s goin’ up like chimney/ And the AP store and they lookin’ at me like the girls who both won Wimberley/ Need a rich bi**h with no enemies,” he raps.

Given the current discourse around newer artists using classic samples at a high rate, and some people believing they aren’t utilized the best, it was no surprise that the internet was split on DontKallMeLuxxy and Lil Yachty’s new track.

“The older rappers need to come together and collectively get some kinda rules going that state that if you trash, you can’t flip my classic record,” one user wrote via X, formerly known as Twitter. “Lil Yachty over ‘Feel It In The Air’? Nah bruh that sh*t should be illegal. You know how angry I’ll be if I hear that [Biggie’s] ‘Juicy’ has been flipped by Lil Half A Slice? Plz stop.”

Another user admitted to being a fan of Lil Boat, but wanted to preserve the aura of “Feel It In The Air,” writing, “I [f**k with] lil yachty style rn But you gotta leave certain samples alone .. [‘Feel It In The Air’] ain’t one to play wit at all [that sh*t] is scripture for the hood.”

A fan praised Lil Yachty’s efforts, saying it deserved some hardware. “Boat dat second verse Grammy worthy,” they wrote in the comments of his Instagram post. “One thing you got to fw is the creativity. Nobody trying to be different anymore. This hard,” another user said.

Yachty had a major 2023 which began with his January album Let’s Start Here., his hit single “Strike (Holster),” “The Secret Recipe” featuring J. Cole, and a string of other singles that had people discussing his mettle as a lyricist.

Despite his laudable output, he had some negative things to say about Hip-Hop as a whole. “Hip-Hop is in a terrible place,” he said during the Musicians On Musicians event hosted by Rolling Stone in November 2023. “The state of Hip-Hop right now is a lot of imitation. It’s a lot of quick, low-quality music being put out. It’s a lot less risk-taking, it’s a lot less originality. People are too safe now. Everyone is so safe. I rather take the risk than take the L.”
