Lil Wayne reacts to André 3000 feeling too old to rap at 48: ‘depressing’

The “Lollipop” rapper refuted Andre 3000's claims that as rappers age the music begins to feel "inauthentic."

Lil Wayne is a lil hurt by André 3000’s recent comments about rapping in your forties.

In a conversation with Tyga on his Young Money Radio Show, Wayne, 41, responded to a quote by André, 48. “I read a depressing quote or two from someone that I respect a lot in hip-hop and music, period,” Wayne said. “They were asked, ‘Why you ain’t been doing music?’ and they was like, ‘Man, what am I gonna talk about? I’m in my 40s, like, what am I going to talk about? What you want to know about me being 40 and the life I’m living at this age? What am I supposed to talk about?’”

Later in the interview, Lil Wayne said, “I feel like I have everything to talk about” in his music.

Wayne was referring to André 3000’s recent proclamation that he doesn’t have much to say lyrically. “Even now people think, Oh, man, he’s just sitting on raps, or he’s just holding these raps hostage. I ain’t got no raps like that.” he said in an interview with GQ. “It actually feels…sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way. I’m 48 years old. And not to say that age is a thing that dictates what you rap about, but in a way it does. And things that happen in my life, like, what are you talking about? ‘I got to go get a colonoscopy.’ What are you rapping about? ‘My eyesight is going bad.”

That’s not to say that André hasn’t tried to record more rap music, though. “I’ve worked with some of the newest, freshest, youngest, and old-school producers,” he said. “I get beats all the time. I try to write all the time.”

The Outkast alum released his first-ever solo album New Blue Sun — an instrumental project that consists entirely of flute music — on Nov. 17. Prior to the new album, André’s last long-form musical project was Outkast’s final album Idlewild in 2006. Lil Wayne has released over a dozen albums in the same period of time.
