Lil Wayne has released his latest single, “Kat Food”
Built around an ominous beat sampling “Work It” by Missy Elliott, “Kat Food” is a mainly vehicle for Tunechi to lay down some of the fun, hanky-panky-loving rhymes he’s known for. Wayne first started hyping up the song earlier this week on Instagram, sharing a video of a street team putting up posters for a lost “kat” with instructions to “please text Lil Wayne” if it’s found.
The single follows “Kant Nobody,” Wayne’s most recent release from earlier this year, which featured a posthumous verse from DMX. Both songs are supposedly part of Weezy’s upcoming record The Carter VI, but no release date or further details have been shared.
Some fans have speculated whether Wayne has teased the release date for the new project, though, utilizing numerology in a way that feels similar to how Swifites decode hints from their beloved, number-minded Taylor Swift. The fan site lilwaynehq.com has suggested that a recent video Wayne shared to Instagram could indicate that the album is dropping on September 29th, just two days after his birthday (his previous entry in the series, The Carter V, debuted on his birthday too). In the video, Wayne opens a script sent to him by the NFL, reading a note out loud that his part is on “page 9, scene 29, line 23.”
Alternatively, some fans have wondered whether the post means Weezy will be performing at the Super Bowl. Either way, Wayne has said he’s working on new music, and “Kat Food” doesn’t disappoint. Earlier this week, it was announced that Wayne would be performing the song at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, marking his first performance at the award show in a decade.
This past May, Wayne wrapped up the “Welcome to the Carter Tour,” which had taken him to 28 cities throughout the spring. The final show, in Los Angeles at the Wiltern, ended on a bit of an odd note, though, as Wayne walked off stage early due to a lackluster crowd response.
Last month, around the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, Consequence named Wayne’s Dedication 2 mixtape the greatest hip-hop mixtape of all time. In August, Wayne performed at Yankee Stadium along with other hip-hop icons, celebrating the anniversary of the genre.
