Just over a year after he was shot in Edgewater, rapper Lil Tjay has opened up about the fateful incident that nearly cost him his life.

Speaking on Hot 97's "Ebro in the Morning," Tjay said the shooting is still a blur to him and that he doesn't remember many details.

"I really don't know what happened," Tjay said on the popular radio show. "I just woke up and could just remember waking up and everything after that."

On June 22, 2022, Tjay, a Bronx native, was shot multiple times in a car during an alleged attempted robbery outside an Edgewater shopping center.

Police previously said Mohamed Konate, 27, approached the red Dodge Durango that Tjay and two others were in on June 22, pointed a gun at them and demanded that they hand over their jewelry. A shootout followed. A witness said Konate was hit by gunfire and then dragged into a white BMW that was driven by an alleged co-conspirator, according to an affidavit.

Konate was charged with attempted murder after the shootout, which injured Tjay and one other man. In May, Tjay was charged with weapons offenses related to the shooting.

Tjay told Ebro and his co-hosts, Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg, that since the shooting he travels in a bulletproof car and has security with him.

"I'm trying to feel relaxed about it, because I feel like if it was my time to go, it would have happened," Tjay said. "But it definitely [will] still just be on my mind."

After the shooting, Tjay spent a significant amount of time recovering in the hospital, but he has since returned to making music. His latest album, "222," released Friday, marks his first major release since the shooting.

The album's title is inspired by the shooting, particularly the date, June 22, and the year, 2022. Tjay also told Ebro that when he was lifted from the scene via helicopter, it was 2:22 a.m.

"222" also features well-known artists Fivio Foreign, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and legendary New York rapper Jadakiss, among others.

Tjay also talked about his collaboration with Ice Spice, a fellow Bronx rap sensation, on the song "Gangsta Boo," which was released in January. Tjay told Ebro that he grew up across the street from Ice Spice, but that they hadn't met until last year.

Lil Tjay has over 8 million followers on Instagram and has released two studio albums through Columbia Records that each charted in the top five on the Billboard 200. His 2021 song with singer 6LACK, "Calling My Phone," debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
