Lil Nas X has been accused of posting a fake acceptance letter to a private Christian university on social media.
The rapper, who is currently promoting his forthcoming single, “J CHRIST,” has been called out by Liberty University. The school says it never issued him an acceptance letter and that there is no record of him ever applying to the evangelical institution.
“We can confirm that Liberty University did not issue the Montero Hill (Lil Nas X) ‘acceptance letter’ posted yesterday to social media,” a spokesperson from the school said in a statement released to TMZ. “And we have no record of Montero Hill (Lil Nas X’s birthname) applying to the University.”

The statement also included the institution’s mission statement, which is “to glorify God by equipping men and women in higher education in fidelity to the Christian faith expressed through the Holy Scriptures.”
Soon after the faux acceptance letter was posted on Lil Nas X’s social media, questions regarding the validity of the document arose. One of the first clues came when it was pointed out that the signature at the bottom was that of former Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, who passed away over 15 years ago in 2007. The current President of Liberty University is Dondi E. Costin.
The discovery of the falsification led to further outrage regarding Lil Nas X’s sudden fixation on Christianity, which many have deemed as a mere marketing ploy and sacrilegious.
Originally posted on Tuesday (Jan. 9), Lil Nas X’s announcement that he would be attending Liberty University saw him insisting that his interest in theology was not a “troll” and that he was excited to learn more about the Christian faith. “I know Twitter hates me right now but I want y’all to know I’m literally about to go to college for biblical studies in the fall,” he wrote at the time. “Not everything is a troll! Anyways, I’M A STUDENT AGAIN! LETS GOOO.”
Lil Nas X’s new single “J CHRIST” is scheduled for release on Friday (Jan. 12).
