Lil Nas X Gets Candid About Identity and Family in the Trailer for the HBO Documentary 'Long Live Montero' — Watch!

HBO will release a documentary about the singer/rapper on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET

Lil Nas X is about to show fans a side of himself that they have yet to see.

An HBO original documentary about the pop star, 24, will soon be released, chronicling his Long Live Montero tour that ran from 2022 to 2023 and exploring his journey since coming out as a queer artist.

Ahead of the premiere of the film titled Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero on HBO and its streaming release on Max at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 27, the trailer dropped on Thursday.

Based on the preview, it appears as though the rapper/singer — who’s known for his statement-making performances and sense of humor — gets candid unlike ever before in the documentary directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel.

“Some people think my music is dope. Some people see me as, like, this Satanic devil,” the Grammy winner (whose real name is Montero Hill) says at the start of the clip. “But me?” he adds, trailing off.

While the trailer offers a look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the “Industry Baby” artist preparing for his debut tour, it also teases how openly fans can expect him to explore his identity and challenging relationship with his family, as well as how seriously he takes his position as a queer artist in the mainstream.

“Coming out was very important to progress,” the hitmaker’s voiceover says at one point.

“There’s still parts of myself that I am learning to accept, but we’re getting closer,” he also says.

According to a press release, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero spans 60 days of his tour of the same name. “Mirroring the stage show, the film is divided into three acts — Rebirth, Transformation, and Becoming — and chronicles Montero’s own odyssey as he navigates the pressures of his meteoric rise to stardom, his desire to inspire his fans and accept the naysayers, and his place within the pantheon of Black, queer icons,” the official synopsis states.

The “Old Town Road” artist himself shared the trailer on Instagram and celebrated its release by adding, “Good News World! 💜,” in the caption.

In the comments, a handful of fellow superstars sounded off about how much they were looking forward to the project. Demi Lovato wrote, “Can’t wait,” while Anitta simply replied, “Looooove,” and Nelly Furtado responded with, “Wow🤩❤️.”

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero debuts on streaming as the hip-hop star is in the midst of launching his next era.

On Jan. 12, Lil Nas X kicked off the release cycle for his sophomore album by dropping “J Christ” and its accompanying music video — which went viral before it even came out due to the religious imagery of the single artwork.

In the visual, the musician portrays a Jesus Christ-like savior to coincide with the song’s lyrics that cheekily refer to his resurrection in music.

While an album title and release date has yet to be announced, the end of the “J Christ” visual teases that more is on the way soon with text that reads, “Day Zero A New Beginning,” followed by a Bible verse: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation, The old man has passed away; Behold, the new has come.”
