Lil Mo Details Struggle With Past Opioid Addiction, How She Kept It Under Wraps

Earlier this month, Lil Mo appeared on the Don’t Call Me White Girl podcast. The “4 Ever” singer spoke with host Mona about her children, upbringing, her time doing reality TV, her past marriages, and her past battle with opioid addiction.

Around the 90-minute mark, they began discussing how Mo’s former drug problem was never a tabloid frenzy because nobody knew until she made it public knowledge.

“You wanna know what’s crazy? Google it. You’ll never see me do a drug,” said the 48-year-old. “One thing I learned from my daddy ’cause my daddy don’t play about me. My dad is 70 years old—’never do anything that will disrespect the family name or compromise your integrity,’ so the only reason why y’all know I was on drugs is because I said it.”

Mona reflected on seeing Mo during those times and being unaware that she was a drug addict because of her then-abusive relationship. “It upset me what I allowed,” said the “Superwoman” singer, tearfully.

Mo expressed, “People don’t understand; Addiction is real.” She continued, “I [was] spending at least a stack a week and I’m making sure everybody good…When I go to California, when we touch down, when I say everything was laid out—everything. Coke, pills, syrup—lit down. And I’ll get up there and sing and you would never know that I’m literally burnt the f**k out.”

In December 2020, Mo celebrated her sobriety in a since-deleted Instagram post. According to ESSENCE, she wrote, “I never thought I could get off opioids, BUT I DID!!!!!!!” It wasn’t until her unnamed abuser threatened to throw her “over a balcony” that a judge granted her “full PFA (protection from abuse)” and she got clean.

The former R&B Divas: L.A. star added, “But to those that came to hell to get me out, I appreciate you soooooo much. We LIT!! Nobody knows what went on in the dark. But now I’m glowing. Clean b***h, inside out. I’m at so much peace. I don’t want it to be disturbed.”

Mo is currently on the road, as part of Katt Williams’ The Dark Matter tour.
