Lifetime Picks Up Euthanasia-Themed Comedic Drama Series ‘Mary Kills People’

Lifetime has picked up Mary Kills People, a provocative six-episode dark comedic drama series starring Hannibal alumna Caroline Dhavernas. It will air in 2017, paired with the third season of the network’s Peabody-winning drama series UnReal.

Lifetime also has come on board as a co-producer of Mary Kills People, joining Entertainment One and Cameron Pictures as well as their Canadian broadcast and production partner Corus Entertainment. Lifetime had already been involved in the creative aspects of the project, including casting, before the comedic drama started production on its six-episode straight-to-series order in July in Toronto.

Created and co-executive produced by Private Eyes scribe Tara Armstrong, Mary Kills People centers on single mother Mary Harris (Dhavernas), an ER doctor by day, but by night, she and her partner, a former plastic surgeon, moonlight as underground angels of death and help terminally ill patients slip away on their own terms. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar; but death is hot, business is booming, and her double life is getting complicated. When her world starts to unravel, Mary realizes she’s going to have to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game. Jay Ryan (Top of the Lake), Richard Short (Vinyl), Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), Greg Bryk (Bitten), and Charlotte Sullivan (Rookie Blue) also star.

“As UnReal drives Lifetime’s position as a destination for some of the strongest female characters on television, we are thrilled to add to our growing scripted lineup Mary Kills People, a unique, rich drama with elements of humor and a fascinatingly complex protagonist that we are thrilled to feature on our network,” said Liz Gateley, EVP and Head of Programming for Lifetime.

Tassie Cameron (Ten Days in The Valley, Rookie Blue), Amy Cameron (The Book of Negroes), Jocelyn Hamilton (Private Eyes) and Tecca Crosby (Private Eyes) executive produce. Holly Dale (The Americans) is directing all six episodes and co-executive produce. Additional writers include Marsha Greene (Private Eyes) , Sherry White (Rookie Blue) and Mike Goldbach (Down a Dark Hall).

“With a creative team led by the incomparable Tassie Cameron, Tara Armstrong’s richly layered writing, Holly Dale’s expert direction, and an outstanding cast, Mary Kills People will be an intense and thought-provoking series,” said John Morayniss, CEOr, eOne Television.
