Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was a big hit with memorable musical numbers — so why wasn’t the soundtrack playing in everyone’s Walkman in 1986? As it happens, an official soundtrack for the film was never released. But that’s about to change. On Sept. 13, La-La Records will begin taking orders for a limited-edition CD featuring the songs and score from the John Hughes comedy, including Yello’s “Oh Yeah,” Wayne Newton’s “Danke Schoen,” and a marching-band-enhanced version of “Twist and Shout.” See the full track listing at Film Music Reporter.

The decision not to release a Ferris Bueller soundtrack was made by the director himself — much to the frustration of music label A&M, which had recently had major success with the soundtrack to Hughes’s Pretty in Pink. As Hughes told Lollipop Magazine (via Wired), “I thought, ‘who’d want all of these songs?’ I mean, would kids want ‘Danke Schoen‘ and ‘Oh Yeah’ on the same record? They probably already had ‘Twist and Shout,’ or their parents did, and to put all of those together with the more contemporary stuff, like the (English) Beat — I just didn’t think anybody would like it.” (He did, however, send a 7-inch single of two of the songs, including The Flowerpot Men’s “Beat City,” to his fan-mail list.)
