Library Lines: Soar above the clouds

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Straits Area Audubon Society welcomes Scott and Kelly Davis as they present “Cloud Forests and Birds of Ecuador.” Scott is the executive director of the Mackinaw Straits Raptor Watch. Together Scott and Kelly will share their experiences from a recent trip to Ecuador. Learn about the cloud forests of the Andes. The cloud forests of Ecuador cover the slopes of the Adean mountains from approximately 900-2,500 meters. These forests have a variety of wildlife and plants many of which have not been studied. Photos from their voyage in the Galapagos Islands will also be shared. All are welcome to attend, refreshments will be served.

Enter your quilt in our annual Community Quilt Show scheduled to be on display throughout March. Bring your quilt to our front desk, include your name, contact number, and approximate quilt size. If you’d like to share the history of your quilt, story behind the making of the quilt or information about the quilter, please do! We will have blank forms at the front desk if you need one. Quilts will be accepted until Feb. 28 and available for pick up after the Quilt Show beginning April 1. We’d love to include your work of art in the show.

Did you know that vampires are swimming in the Great Lakes? Well, vampires of the fish variety! Beginning about 150 years ago, the Great Lakes were invaded by sea lampreys — parasitic fish native to the Atlantic Ocean. Sea lampreys drink the blood of Great Lakes fish, each killing up to 40 pounds.

Join us at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, as Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) communications associate, Andrea Miehls, talks about the devastating effects of sea lampreys on Great Lakes fisheries, how an incredible research effort at the USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station led to the discovery of multiple tools to control sea lampreys, and how the GLFC has been able to reduce sea lamprey populations by 90% across the Great Lakes. Andrea will have live sea lampreys at her presentation and all attendees will have an opportunity to meet — and even hold — these vampire fish of the Great Lakes.

“But What If I Fail?” author Jennifer Dowker will present at the library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12. Jennifer, mom of three boys, owner of Nautical North Family Adventures, published author, captain, and survivor of a real-life game of 52 pick-ups will share the intricacies of navigating the hardships and obstacles leading to victory in the game we all call life. Through stories of her own life and times on the water, Captain Jenn will inspire and motivate the audience to make their own positive life changes.

Spring break will be here before we know it and for those families planning a staycation we have activities planned. One event we are super excited to announce is “Tales & Tails.” Our guest, a 5-year-old labrador retriever and certified therapy dog Parker, will be at the library on Tuesday, March 26, to read with children from 1-3 p.m. Visit our website cheboyganlibrary.org and follow us on Facebook to learn more about all the events happening at your local library.
