Since 2009, the Cheboygan Area Public Library has hosted an annual community quilt show and despite a hiatus during COVID-19, the show will go on.

The month of February brings Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents' Day, and we honor Black History Month. Mardi Gras falls in February this year and so does Ash Wednesday. It’s also leap year so we have an extra day! Here’s what we have planned at the library for February.

Monday Drawing Class with Kimberly Liedel-Ross begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 5-26. Ages 9 and up are encouraged to register. Cost is $20 for the four-session course, which includes instruction and supplies.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, we invite kids ages 7 and up to register for our pop-up Snow Slime Time! All supplies will be provided just be prepared to get a little messy and to have some fun making multi-sensory Snow Slime. Please register in advance, 231-627-2381.

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Straits Area Audubon Society welcomes Scott and Kelly Davis as they present Cloud Forests and Birds of Ecuador. Scott is the executive director of the Mackinaw Straits Raptor Watch. Together, Scott and Kelly will share their experiences from a recent trip to Ecuador. Learn about the cloud forests of the Andes. The cloud forests of Ecuador cover the slopes of the Adean mountains from approximately 900-2,500 meters. They are forests with high biodiversity with a variety of wildlife and plants that have not been studied. Photos from their voyage in the Galapagos Islands will also be shared. All are welcome to attend, refreshments will be served.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, from noon to 5:30 p.m. we partnered with Versiti Blood Center of Michigan to host a blood drive on our lower level. Please follow the link on our website cheboyganlibrary.org to register. We appreciate every donor as each donation has a positive impact on lives throughout Michigan.

On Sunday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., we are hosting a Jigsaw Puzzle Competition. Eight teams of up to four puzzlers are invited to register and compete in putting together a new 300 large-piece puzzle provided by the library. The first team to complete their puzzle or with the least amount of individual pieces left on the table at the finish time wins a prize! Registration is required. The library will not be assigning teams so call your friends and family, gather a team, then have your team captain register with us for a puzzling afternoon at the library.

Calling all quilters, you are cordially invited to participate in our annual Community Quilt Show scheduled to be on display in our Gallery throughout the month of March. Beginning Feb. 5-28, quilts will be accepted at our front desk. Be sure to include your name, contact number, and approximate quilt size. If you’d like to share the history of your quilt, story behind the making or information about the quilter, please do! We will have blank forms at the front desk if you need one. Quilts will be available for pick up beginning April 1. Please consider sharing your quilts with us. The more quilts we have the better the show!
