Library Lines: Learn about earth and its wondrous creatures with 'Planet' program

The Be Kind to our Planet program will be live at the Cheboygan Library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 12. Bring the entire family to see live animals from different continents and learn the importance of how our environment affects their habitats. This is a free program, everyone is welcome. The content of this program will appeal to adults, families, teens, anyone interested in learning about animals and the planet we share. This is a rare opportunity to see unusual species up close and to ask questions. Registration is not required.

Books are sweet and so are the summer reading activities offered at the library next week. At 1 p.m. Monday, July 7, children 7 and older are welcome to stop by for Candyland Playground at the library. As part of our ongoing summer reading events, we invite children to create paper cupcake people then turn them loose in Ms. Nancy’s Candyland playground. This is a free activity, registration is required.

Preschool Storytime is back in session beginning 10:15 a.m. July 11 with Ms. Nancy. Weather permitting, we will meet for Storytime in the Children’s Garden for reading and outdoor activities.

Teens meet up at the library to make Candy Sushi at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. All the ingredients to make these fantastically sweet sushi rolls will be provided. All you need to do is sign up and show up. This is a free activity, bring your friends and have some fun.

Parents and grandparents bring your preschoolers at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13, for our super fantastic Cupcake Walk with Children’s Librarian Ms. Nancy. Music and sweet fun will be had by all. Please register for this event.

While you are at the library turn in completed reading logs to be entered for a chance to win one of the awesome prize baskets displayed in our entryway and lobby display cases. Winners will be selected at our Summer Reading Finale Party at 6 p.m. Aug. 2.

Need fast access to the internet? The Cheboygan Library has increased our internet bandwidth from 35-60 mbps for both uploads and downloads. Our wi-fi network can be accessed 24/7 near our building. The best connectivity is along our building on Ball Street just outside the children’s garden. During operating hours, we offer 12 public-use computers. Printing is available from the computer lab or your private device for $.15 per page. Scanning is free at the library. As part of our “Library of Things,” we offer eight wi-fi hotspots available to be checked out for a three-week loan period. As you can imagine our wi-fi hotspots are very popular so there is a waiting list for this free take-anywhere access to the internet.

The library now offers feature films as part of our collection. Popular movies on DVD are available to be checked out free of charge. Some of the new DVD titles include, 65 starring Adam Driver, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," "The Covenant" starring Jake Gyllenhaal, "The Man From Toronto" starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson and Sweetwater. Also available on DVD are new non-fiction titles including "Niagara Falls PBS Nature Series" and "Diabetes Health and Wellness Learning."

We also offer some television series on DVD and many children’s movies on DVD. Visit the library and experience for yourself all the available resources, connectivity, activities, programs and new books, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, and audiobooks just to name a few. All you need is your library card!
