Library Lines: Expand your knowledge base

Drawing class for anyone ages 9 and up begins is 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, in our art studio. Drawing is taught by local artist Kimberly Liedel-Ross. Registration is requested. Cost for the four-session class is $20, which includes instruction and supplies. Drawing classes continue through January weekly on the 15, 22 and 29.

Preschool Story Time with Ms. Judy begins 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the children’s room. Ms. Judy is a retired preschool teacher and current community educator in American Sign Language. Judy is enthusiastic and full of positive energy. Storytime will include songs, stories and socialization through art and activities. Ms. Judy is looking forward to meeting young ones and their families. Story Time happens every Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. through Feb. 27. Come join the fun!

American Sign Language class begins again 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, with instructor Judy Ryan. Learn vocabulary, practice signs and build your skills. All signing levels are welcome to attend. There is no need to register, simply come to class. If you miss a class, no worries, come to the next session when you can. Sign language class is free to attend. Learn a new way to communicate or sharpen your skills!

Beginner Tai Chi classes with Martha Orloff begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, and again on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 4:30 p.m. Pick a day that works best for you and attend that class to enroll. Enrollment closes on Jan. 25 so if you are interested in trying Tai Chi be sure to attend class before enrollment closes. Tai Chi is a free class offered at the library.

Book Group meets on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the boardroom at 11 a.m. to discuss Marie Benedict’s novel "The Other Einstein."

Are you ready to explore Iceland? Join Doug Fuller, past director of stewardship for the Little Traverse Conservancy and guest speaker for the Straits Area Audubon Society, as he discusses this Nordic Island nation defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and of course famous bird life. The Blue Lagoon, glaciers, and waterfalls top the list of must-sees. Iceland is also famous for its history having been settled by Vikings and known as “The Land of Fire and Ice” due to its contrasting landscapes. Learn more about Iceland on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m. on the lower level of the library in the Linda Widrig Neuss room.

There is still time to register for our digital photography class with Dan Welihan. Dan’s first interest in photography began at 5 years old watching his grandfather take home movies and photos. Dan eventually inherited his grandfather’s cameras and enrolled in a photography class at Central Michigan University. Photography has been his serious avocation ever since. Dan taught photography at Jackson Community College. His photographs have been published in children’s textbooks and he is the main photographer for Cheboygan Today Magazine. Dan is also an active member in the Cheboygan Photography Club. Photography classes begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. In this five-class series with each class building upon the previous session, students will learn digital photography essentials, photo composition and creativity, image organization and storage, create a digital masterpiece and go on a local photo shoot with the date, time and location decided upon by the students. All skill levels are welcome, sign up today!
