Wrapping up the week of spring break fun at the library on Thursday, March 28, families are invited to prepare for the upcoming total solar eclipse that will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8. We will celebrate this momentous occasion by making models of the Earth, moon and sun as well as creating pinhole eclipse viewers using household recycled materials. Create spectacular solar art also. All activities are designed for school-age children, families are welcome and registration is not required.

Looking ahead to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, we are excited to host our mushroom friends Brianne and Burt Crittenden from Moonlight Mushroom Co. Learn about mushrooms in the wild and the “wood wide web.” Find out how mushrooms help humans and why we should care about them. The basics of edible mushroom cultivation for the at-home hobbyist will be discussed and you may register to receive a take-home mushroom growing kit. Supplies are limited, register in person or call the library at 231-627-2381 if you’d like a take-home mushroom kit. Registration is not required to attend the seminar. All are welcome!

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in collaboration with the Straits Area Audubon Society we welcome U.S. Forest Service Insect Specialist, Robert Haaks. His presentation, “Aquatic Insects, Concentrating on the Value of Midges to Migrating Birds,” will cover information relating to many groups of aquatic insects and he will discuss interesting aspects of their life histories. Did you know that hatching aquatic midges serve as the primary food source for birds and fish? Join us to discover more interesting facts about aquatic insects and learn the important roles they play in keeping freshwater ecosystems functioning properly.
