The fall season not only ushers in increasingly shorter days and pumpkin spice everything; it also marks the start of Libra season.

Libra is one of the twelve signs of the zodiac, an ancient system based on the position of the sun in the sky on someone’s date of birth.

“Libra season marks the beginning of fall, as it begins the same day as the Autumnal Equinox,” Lisa Stardust, astrologer and three-time bestselling author, tells PEOPLE. “Libra is ruled by the planet Venus and is symbolized by the scales of Justice. This explains their fun loving nature and why they value the civilities of society — as well as law and order.”

In the zodiac calendar, Libra comes after Virgo and before Scorpio, and out of the four elements (earth, fire, water and air), it is categorized as an air sign.

"Air signs are breezy and keep ideas buzzing in their head,” Stardust says. “They’re always on the move from one project to the next and communicate their ideas and visions.”

What are the key personality traits of a Libra?

Stardust describes Libras with words like “charming,” “romantic,” and “artistic.” They are said to be one of the more social signs, she says, and are known for their “flair for fashion and style.”

Libras also tend to strive for balance and fairness, says Stardust — hence the scales of justice being their official symbol.

“Being ruled by Venus makes Libra a social sign who expresses themselves through words and art,” the astrologer explains. “Since they’re represented by the scales of Justice, they like harmony and peace at all times. They’re the air sign that keeps things even tempered and helps others make rational thoughts. Their social nature urges them to focus on relationships and to be friendly with those who are different than them in order to keep their scales balanced.”

Stardust adds that Libras often lead a “fun-filled life of intellectual and artistic pursuits,” but due to their energetic nature, can at times be unreliable.

Libras also have a heightened sense of empathy, which can sometimes backfire on them, says New York City-based astrologer Rebecca Gordon.

“They are also extremely aware of how everyone else is doing in the room,” she tells PEOPLE. “This trait gives them great insight and empathy, though they can also tend to put themselves last because of this acute awareness.”

Which zodiac signs are most compatible with Libras?

Because they share traits like sociability and being good communicators, other air signs (Gemini and Aquarius) tend to be the most compatible with Libras, says Stardust.

Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), she says, have a different kind of relationship with Libras.

“In particular, Libra offers them a diplomatic approach to assess their passions from a rational perspective,” Stardust says. “One of the fire signs, Aries, opposes Libra in the sky. Although they harness different energies, Libra can offer support and guidance. In return, Aries pushes Libra to ignite the fire under their belly.”

Which zodiac signs are least compatible with Libras?

According to Stardust, compatibility doesn’t hinge solely on your star sign, but your birth chart as a whole. A birth chart uses your birth date, time and location to map out not just the position of the sun at the time you were born, but all of the planets in the sky.

However, the astrologer points to typical characteristics of certain signs that may not jive with Libras.

“The earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn have a harder time understanding Libra because the air sign can be flighty, while the earth signs are grounded,” she says. “Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) are emotional and intuitive, while Libra is direct and methodical.”

How does Libra season affect Libras?

Libra season marks the “solar return” for those with the star sign, Stardust says.

“We look to their birthdate to see what astrological transits will affect their energy for the year ahead,” she explains. “This year, there is a big solar eclipse occurring in the sign of Libra on October 14, which will be super intense for them. It’ll mark a time of change and growth, which can be hard for anyone (not just Libras!).”

While there may be challenges, Gordon adds that this time of year is when Libras truly thrive.

“Libras are always going to be in their prime when it’s Libra season,” says the astrologer. As for the upcoming eclipse, she says: “Eclipses expedite evolution and help to shake us out of any ruts.”

Which celebrities are Libras?

There are lots of celebrity Libras, but one of the most well-known is Kim Kardashian, whom Stardust says leads a life that’s very aligned with her star sign.

“She’s a master of balancing her work and personal life,” she explains. “Also, she’s very relationship-oriented, even with her sisters and friends, and she’s good at maintaining them.”

Cardi B is also a Libra, and has shared her thoughts on her own sign as well as the other zodiac signs. In a TikTok posted in September 2022, the rapper explained the personalities of each sign, and when it came to Libras, she said they “won't cuff you.”

She continued, “The thing about Libras is, if they don’t have their life together and have their job together, they’re not gonna cuff y’all because they put their work and their dreams over you. It’s not you, it’s them,” adding, “They might love you to death, but they feel like they’re not worthy to have you.”
