We may very well be living in the golden age of LGBTQ+ books. Spanning across genres and cultures, these reads continue to pave the way for more visibility within and beyond the queer community.

This Pride Month, we recognize that we can't take this inclusive celebration of love and identity for granted. These books explain why that is, as many of them grapple with living in a society that does not validate the equality of all people — they are a complex reflection of our current times.

One crucial example of this is the discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay” bill signed into law in Florida last year (now spreading to other states) that restricts discussion of gender identity, sexuality, and LGBTQ+ issues in school, which harms LGBTQ+ youth by eliminating the classroom as a safe space to openly talk about topics that are important to their lives and mental health. As the push to spread "Don't Say Gay" bills and anti-drag legislation accelerates, The Human Rights Campaign has declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people.

To extend your support of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and well beyond, we suggest buying these books from a local or queer-owned bookstore and donating to an organization that is fighting for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ people, such as The Marsha P. Johnson Institute, The Trevor Project, and The Ali Forney Center.

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, these 20 critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ books, both new and enduring fiction favorites, beautifully illustrate the joys and pains of the human experience in their own unique ways.

‘Loveless’ by Alice Oseman

Shop Now

This LGBTQ+ book and YA novel will give you all the feels, no matter what age you are.

Its protagonist, Georgia, is asexual/aromantic and is having a hard time wrapping her head around the ways her friends are changing. Everyone is talking endlessly about their crushes, makeouts, and hookups — meanwhile, Georgia is trying to make sense of what it means to have none of these inclinations, craving a different kind of connection altogether.

Her story shows that it's not easy making sense of yourself when the path ahead feels largely uncharted, but it's still a very worthwhile journey.

Reviewers of this novel who identify as aro and/or ace call this book “validating,” “deeply relatable,” and “an important read.”

'Her Body and Other Parties: Stories' by Carmen Maria Machado

Carmen Maria Machado's celebrated literary debut is a sublimely queer story collection, tinged throughout with paranormal themes. Each of the eight stories features protagonists and characters at varying points on the sexuality spectrum, dealing with the myriad traumas in their lives as a result of their female-presenting identities.

All-powerful and thought-provoking, the book's first story, The Husband Stitch, is one of the most chilling and artfully rendered in the collection, a retelling of the children's horror tale The Green Ribbon.

Set in San Francisco in the early 2000s, this kaleidoscopic, experimental novel is about the marriage of Young Ae and her husband (who is never named) and their many casual affairs.

Rather than centering on plot, Neotenica's dreamlike examination of femininity, race, and family is altogether off-kilter with its metaphorical language that defines things by what they are not.

'When the Moon Was Ours' by Anna-Marie McLemore

Abundant with darkly whimsical fairy tale elements, this novel is a treat for any fantasy reader, and it also happens to be a beautiful LGBTQ+ love story as well. Miel and Sam are each other's closest friend and comfort, as they're both misunderstood by the greater community in different ways. Sam is coming to terms with a gender identity that wasn't assigned to him at birth, while Miel has the unusual, mystical ability to grow roses from her wrist.

These roses are a source of great intrigue to the manipulative Bonner sisters, who want to use Miel's powers for their own gain. With its atmospheric, evocative prose, this novel (loosely inspired by "La Llorona" in Mexican folklore) is one to really savor.
