Lewis Cass Marching Kings place second at state final
Oct. 31—For the second straight year the Lewis Cass Marching Kings had yet to hear their name called as the judges prepared to announce the top two finishers for their division in the state final.
And for the second straight year, the Marching Kings were announced as the runners up in Class D on Saturday at the 2023 Indiana State School Music Association Marching Band State Finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Lewis Cass returned home to Walton with their silver medals at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, accompanied by a police and fire escort starting in Galveston. A large crowd was there to greet the band members off the bus and when they walked out of the school after dropping their equipment off.
The Marching Kings called their state final performance "Crossroads" and it's inspired by the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken." The band was dressed in black pants with white shirts featuring vertical silver lines. Its color guard performers wore long yellow dresses.
"Our show is about making sure you choose the right path and I feel like it's very fitting to me because I'm like 'did I do it right? Did I choose the right path?' I hope this tells me the right answer," said senior Nora Craw, a band captain who plays the mellophone, ahead of the state final.
This is the 41st trip to the state finals for Lewis Cass. It has won 10 state finals, with the last coming in 2021.
Forest Park High School in Ferdinand won Class D.
