'Lethal Weapon' Creators Compare It to Their Latest Buddy Cop Movie, 'The Nice Guys'

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star in the new buddy cop movie The Nice Guys, now in theaters. And while the pair are relatively new to this kind movie, the film’s creators are no strangers to the genre.

Director-writer Shane Black and producer Joel Silver are the masterminds behind such buddy cop classics as 1987’s Lethal Weapon, 1991’s The Last Boy Scout, and 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. They were happy to be working together again on this type of movie.

“We like to do it every once and again,” Black said about teaming up with Silver for another buddy cop movie. He even refers to The Nice Guys as a “spiritual cousin” to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Silver reflected on the fact that they’ve been working together for nearly 30 years, starting back in 1987, when Black was a 21-year-old graduate of UCLA. “I think it’s been kind of a journey,” he said.
