Leonardo DiCaprio Remembers Luke Perry: He 'Was a Kindhearted and Incredibly Talented Artist'

Leonardo DiCaprio is mourning the death of Luke Perry.

Following the tragic news of Perry’s death on Monday, March 4, DiCaprio, 44, shared a touching tribute on social media in honor of the late Beverly Hills, 90210 actor, who died at age 52.

“Luke Perry was a kindhearted and incredibly talented artist,” began DiCaprio, who worked with Perry on the upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

“It was an honor to be able to work with him,” the Oscar-winning actor’s tweet continued. “My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones.”

Perry’s shocking death came days after he suffered a massive stroke. Perry was hospitalized on Feb. 27 after paramedics were dispatched to his home in Sherman Oaks, California. The actor remained under observation for five days, but died on Monday.

While fans of the actor can see Perry’s final episodes of the CW show Riverdale in the coming months, his last film role will be as actor Wayne Maunder — who played Scott Lancer in the TV show Lancer, which ran on CBS from 1968 to 1970 — in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (set for release on July 26), which stars DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Al Pacino and more.

Perry wrapped filming before his death, according to Entertainment Weekly.

In the movie, set in 1969 Los Angeles, DiCaprio stars as Rick Dalton, the former star of a western TV series, and Pitt, 55, as his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth. They’re both struggling to survive in a Hollywood they no longer recognize. Although one person they do recognize is Rick’s next-door neighbor: Sharon Tate, played by Robbie, 28. Tate was slain by members of the Manson Family cult in August 1969.

DiCaprio was among an outpouring of celebrities that shared fond memories and condolences in honor of the father of two. (Perry shared son Jack, 21, and 18-year-old daughter Sophie with ex Rachel “Minnie” Sharp.)

Ian Ziering was the first 90210 star to pay tribute, tweeting, “Dearest Luke, I will forever bask in the loving memories we’ve shared over the last thirty years. May your journey forward be enriched by the magnificent souls who have passed before you, just like you have done here, for those you leave behind.”

Jennie Garth released an exclusive statement to PEOPLE: “My heart is broken. He meant so much to so many. Such a very special person. I share my deep sadness with his family and all who loved him. Such a terrible loss.”

In lieu of flowers, the Perry family asks that donations be made to Fight Colorectal Cancer and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
