Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and a part of the expanding Lokesh Cinematic Universe, Leo is an Indian Tamil-language action thriller film. The plot revolves around Parthiban “Parthi,” a seemingly mild-mannered animal rescuer and café owner. When his past comes to haunt him and threatens his loved ones, Parthi must embrace his older self as a ruthless criminal.
Leo was released on October 19, 2023, in theaters in standard, IMAX, and other premium formats in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi languages. The film received mixed reviews from the critics but was a box-office success, earning ₹537 crore ($64 million) globally against a ₹250–350 crore ($30–42 million) budget as of early November 2023. Leo 2 could arrive by 2026 at the earliest.
The ending of Leo hints toward a prospective sequel. Moreover, it was reported in August 2023 that Leo would have a sequel, and its production would begin after Lokesh was done with Thalaivar 170, Kaithi 2, and Vikram 2. Thalaivar 170 is a film starring Rajinikanth, while Kaithi 2 and Vikram 2 are future entries in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. It can be conservatively speculated that the filming for Leo 2 would begin at least two years later.
The production for the first film started in January 2023, and it came out in October. If the sequel follows the same pattern, Leo 2 is likely to come out in 2026 at the earliest. This will be the first sequel in Vijay’s career as an actor.
