At this point in his legendary career, Lenny Kravitz is used to the public’s interest in his personal life. Still, he wonders why fans are surprised that he and his ex-wife, Lisa Bonet, maintain a healthy dynamic. Over the years, tabloids have speculated about their relationship, but to Kravitz, the answer is obvious. They’re family—plain and simple.

Kravitz and Bonet married in 1987 and soon after had their first and only child, Zoë Kravitz, in 1988. Just a few years later, the couple split up, and divorced in 1993. During that time, Zoë lived with her mother in Topanga, California, but Kravitz remained a dedicated co-parent. In his new cover story for Esquire, Kravitz explained that he and Bonet simply chose to be on good terms. “I wouldn’t think of it as this heroic feat,” he said of their parenting dynamic. “This is just normal to me.”

Even when Bonet married Jason Momoa in 2017, their agreement didn’t falter. Case in point: In 2022, Zoë Kravitz starred in The Batman, alongside Robert Pattinson. It was a remarkable feat—given her remarkable turn as as Catwoman—but there was one problem. Lenny and Lisa couldn't make it to the premiere. In their absence, Momoa stepped in, even though he and Bonet just divorced. “I got you,” he told Kravitz. “I’m going to this one. I’ll be there.”

As promised, Momoa showed up to the premiere. He even brought Kravitz’s half-siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf, with him. “It was beautiful,” Kravitz said.
