True crime author visits Lenawee District Library

The Lenawee District Library is once again hosting Michigan true crime author Tobin Buhk, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. He will be presenting his newest program: “Michigan Malicious.” Due to the nature of the program, it is intended for ages 18 or older, a news release from the LDL said.

During the program, attendees will come face-to-face with the miscreants who put the “malicious” in Michigan history, the library said.

“Using photos, research and more, hear all about some of the boldest, bloodiest and most bodacious criminals in the history of the Great Lakes State,” the release said.

There will be an opportunity for those in attendance to purchase copies of the author's book following the presentation. Cash, checks and PayPal are accepted forms of payment.

As a freelance author, Buhk has written numerous books focusing on the dark and seedy parts of Michigan, the library said. Some of his previous works include the story of the Lonely Hearts Killers, the dark corners of Michigan’s prisons and the various serial killers who have caused havoc throughout the state.

“With a true dedication to his craft, Tobin goes above and beyond to bring readers an accurate and thoroughly examined history,” the release said.

Bob Seger biographer to present at Blissfield library

Originally planned to give a book talk March 2023, author Edward Sarkis Balian requested the program be rescheduled. It is now scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.

Balian is the author of “Turn the Page: The Bob Seger Story.”

Edward Sarkis Balian, left, author of “Turn the Page: The Bob Seger Story" will be a guest presenter at the Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library in Blissfield, 407 S. Lane St., beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Standing along with Balian and holding a copy of his book is Seger's wife, Juanita "Nita" Dorricott Seger.

In suitable Michigan fashion, the library will provide legendary Detroit refreshments during the program, including Better Made snacks, Vernors ginger ale and Faygo soft drinks.

Balian’s bookincludes stories about Seger drawing on many interviews, his composing, band personnel, recording sessions, tours and his private, personal life, the library said in a news release.

“Because Seger is a very private person, ‘Turn the Page’ is the only Bob Seger biography,” the release said.

The book is more than 280 pages, with more than 60 color and black-and-white images, and more than 220 well-documented footnotes.

“Turn the Page” will be available for sale after the show. Balian donates 30% of his royalties to charity, with half of his sales going to Seger’s favorite charity, Oakland County Children’s Village. “Turn the Page” is also available from Amazon and eBay.

Balian, who can be found online at www.EdwardSarkisBalian.com, grew up in Detroit and was a member of a local rock band, Andromeda, at the same time Seger was getting his start as a rock ‘n’ roll star.

In fact, the library said, “Bob and Edward shared many stages and had the same entertainment business attorney for over four decades.”

Thursday’s program is part of the Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library’s "Blissfield Unbound" program series, which is sponsored by Brown & Sons Roofing and Siding and Knapp Motors.
