In 2023, over thirty-five years after the release of the first game, Nintendo announced that a live-action film based on the games was in development. Conversations about a potential cinematic adaptation of The Legend of Zelda have been around for a long time. Imagi Animation Studios approached Nintendo with the idea of developing a computer-animated film based on The Legend of Zelda in 2007. However, that didn’t happen. Eventually, in November 2023, it was reported that Nintendo would collaborate with Sony Pictures on a live-action Legend of Zelda. Wes Ball (the Maze Runner films) came on board to direct and produce the film. Derek Connolly (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu) is writing the script.
During an April 2024 interview with Polygon, Ball indicated that Zelda would not have as much motion-capture as his upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He explained that the project would instead lean towards being more “real” and “grounded.” The filmmaker also underscored the fact that he couldn’t speak much about it.
“We’re working hard, and we’re gonna make something great,” Ball said before adding that “Nintendo will pop out of the bushes here and like yank me away [if he said anything more about the film].”
We can safely speculate that it might be a while before the production begins. So, The Legend of Zelda will probably premiere in 2026 at the earliest.
