Legend of Zelda Director Reveals Whether Link Will Talk

The director of the Legend of Zelda movie has commented on whether or not its hero speaks.

Not much is known about the upcoming live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s beloved video game series. Wes Ball has only provided a few scant details since the film was announced last year, with The Legend of Zelda director last dropping a new update in March 2023.

But now, in an interview with ComicBook, Ball has hinted whether or not Link, the protagonist of the series, will have any spoken dialogue.

"A or B or C. I'll just have it like the game – you just have a little dialogue boxes pop up in the movie and you pick which one you want. Link does communicate to villagers all over through the game, you just don't hear his voice."

It’s not clear whether Ball is joking or not, but his words suggest his movie is no straightforward adaptation. Questions remain about how to take a heavily stylised video game series into a live-action world - and how to characterize a protagonist who never speaks.

If Ball is being serious, however, having dialogue boxes would be a fun, meta way for the film to remain faithful to the games. If nothing else, Ball wants to nail the appeal of The Legend of Zelda.

"I grew up on playing that game since I was a kid,” he continues. “You know, it's super important to me. That transported me to worlds that occupy my imagination forever. It's part of my DNA. So I'm a giant fan. I'm gonna approach it that way and try to give people what they want but try to make something great, something worthy of the property."
