What, like it’s hard to make a Legally Blonde prequel?

On Tuesday, May 14, Prime Video announced that it has ordered a Legally Blonde prequel series, titled Elle, from Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine.

Witherspoon, 48, will serve as an executive producer for the series alongside Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, Marc Platt and creator Laura Kittrell, who wrote for shows like Insecure and High School.

Elle will follow Elle Woods through her high school years, long before her time as the nation’s premier lawyer in pink. According to a release shared with PEOPLE, the prequel delves into “the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”

Witherspoon, who originated the role of Elle Woods in the 2001 classic, expressed in a statement that she “couldn’t be more excited” about the upcoming series.

“Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!” the Big Little Lies actress said. “I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine - along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell - for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, called the fictional Harvard Law School graduate “one of the most quotable, iconic, and beloved characters that is ingrained in the fabric of Hollywood history.”

“We are honored to bring her origin story to our global Prime Video customers,” Sanders added of the show, which will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories. “Reese and Hello Sunshine’s vision for this series, coupled with Laura Kittrell’s winning voice, made this show completely undeniable.”

Previously, it was thought that Witherspoon would reprise her role in a third Legally Blonde film after she posted a video of herself wearing a pink sequin bikini on a blue pool float.

“It’s true,” she captioned the June 2018 video.

The next year, she told Entertainment Tonight that she was having “a great time working” on the script, but nothing had been filmed.

MGM originally announced a May 2022 release date for the film, but it has since been delayed.

Mindy Kaling, who was tapped as a co-writer for the third installment with Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), addressed the delay in a March 2022 TIME interview, sharing that they “did not want to be responsible for ruining what is essentially Reese’s Avengers franchise.”

Kaling, 44, listed questions the script needed to answer, including, “What is Elle Woods like at 42? Does she end up becoming all the things she wanted? How does that personality manifest in a grown woman? Has she become more cynical? Her brightness and her cheerfulness really worked when she was 22, but how has life changed her perspective on things?"
