Legally Blonde 3 is the potential third cinematic entry in the Legally Blonde media franchise that began with the namesake 2001 novel by author Amanda Brown. The first film, Legally Blonde, came out on July 13, 2001, and was a massive success, leading to the development of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, which premiered on July 2, 2003. Although the film was commercially successful, it garnered poor reviews from critics, and no other feature film has come out since then.

However, the producers tried to expand the Legally Blonde franchise in the television format with the releases of the telefilms Legally Blonde (2003), Legally Blonde: The Musical (2007), and Legally Blondes (2009). The first one was supposed to serve as a pilot for a TV series, but those plans were scrapped. Legally Blonde 3’s release date could be around sometime in 2025.

In June 2018, it was reported that Witherspoon was in negotiations with MGM, the production company that had the rights to the franchise, to reprise her role as Elle Woods in a prospective third feature film, alongside serving as a producer through her Hello Sunshine studio. Moreover, Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, the screenplay writers of the first film, were close to finalizing a deal with MGM to pen the script of the third installment.

The film was supposed to be released on May 8, 2020, but that didn’t end up happening. Reports published in May 2020 revealed that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor had been hired to write a fresh script. MGM was acquired by Amazon in May 2021, and the latter showed an active interest in the franchise, with plans to expand on it using the third film and even develop a TV series.

Legally Blonde 3 is supposedly in pre-production. If filming begins in early 2024, the movie can potentially come out in theaters sometime in 2025.
