Legal Activist Says If Judge Saw Christopher Bennett’s Psych Evaluation, Sentencing Might Have Been Different

Janet, a legal activist who says she has been working in the criminal justice reform system for 25 years, says that she believes the sentencing in Christopher Bennett’s case is “absolutely ridiculous.” “One of the biggest things that I saw that should have been used in Chris’ defense was his psychological evaluation,” Janet says. “If this psychological evaluation had been brought up, I feel like his entire sentencing would have been completely different.” Bennett was sentenced to 1,800 years in prison when he was 18 years old after he admitted to shooting his stepfather, Vincent, in the head when he claimed he saw him molesting his younger sister. “I absolutely believe that due to who Vincent was – he was a state employee, he came from an upper middle-class family within the area -- and I do think that has a lot to do with why Chris got such a large sentence,” says Janet, who has vowed to help the family fight for Bennett’s freedom. Dr. Phil reads excerpts from Bennett’s psych evaluation in the video above.
