Both Barack and Michelle Obama were executive producers of Leave the World Behind as their production company ‘Higher Ground’ signed to produce the thriller.

After starting ‘Higher Ground’ in 2022, Barack and Michelle Obama took on Leave the World Behind as one of the projects for their company. While they didn’t appear in the film themselves, their influence helped shape the narrative of the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barack Obama had detailed notes to give on the film’s script to help root it in reality. While speaking with Vanity Fair, director Sam Esmail revealed how the former US president was deeply invested in bringing the movie to life.

Esmail said about Barack Obama:

“He had a lot [of] notes about the characters and the empathy we would have for them. I have to say he is a big movie lover, and he wasn’t just giving notes about things that were from his background. He was giving notes as a fan of the book, and he wanted to see a really good film.”

The director revealed further details about Obama’s feedback to his draft. He said:

“I am writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing. And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details…I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the fuck out of me.”

Apart from this, Obama’s family also had a huge say in the way the characters interacted with each other while tackling deeper themes of its narrative. The ex-president also helped with the technological touch-up for how the world would be in an apocalypse like the one showcased in the film.
