On Friday, December 1, 2023, Oprah Winfrey hosted a Los Angeles event for the new Paramount+ anthology series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” at the Sunset Towers in West Hollywood, California. Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford was on the red carpet to interview stars David Oyelowo, Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Tosin Morohunfola, Forrest Goodluck and Justin Hurtt-Dunkley. She also caught up with creator and executive producer Chad Feehan and guest Niecy Nash-Betts. Check out the exclusive red-carpet interviews from the swanky celebratory event above!

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” has become this year’s most-watched series on Paramount+. The anthology series turns back the hands of time highlighting the real-life journey of Bass Reeves, an enslaved Black man who became the first-ever Black U.S. Deputy Marshal west of Mississippi. Becoming law enforcement as an enslaved Black man was certainly not the norm, but Reeves overcame the odds. Despite Bass Reeves arresting more than 3,000 outlaws over the duration of his career, he was challenged with the spiritual and moral cost to his beloved wife and children.
