Controversial Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert first became a mother when she was just a teenager.

In 2003, Lauren, who is a staunch opponent of abortion, met her now ex-husband Jayson Boebert when he visited the McDonald’s where she was working, Lauren recounted in her 2022 memoir My American Life. Though she was only 16 and he was 22 at the time, their relationship became serious, fast: Four months after they met, they traveled to Las Vegas to get married — and by the summer of 2004, they “decided to start a family,” she wrote.

“A lot of people would say we moved way too fast, but we didn’t think that at all,” she wrote in her memoir. “Make no mistake: this was no shotgun wedding. Jayson and I intentionally wanted to get married and start our new life together.”

That life together included welcoming four children between 2005 and 2011: sons Tyler, Brody, Kaydon and Roman. All of her children were born in Colorado and spent most of their childhood being raised on a “rural country farm,” according to Lauren’s memoir.

Lauren, who was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020, also wrote that it was her children who inspired her to pursue a political career in the first place — even if it meant spending time away from her sons while working in Washington, D.C.

But as Lauren seeks her third congressional term in 2024, her political and personal life looks quite different from when she was first elected in 2020. She became a 36-year-old grandmother in April 2023,  divorced her husband of nearly 20 years a month later and revealed in December 2023 that she was switching congressional districts — to Colorado’s solidly Republican 4th District — for the 2024 election (after narrowly winning reelection in 2022). One thing that has remained constant over Lauren’s two terms in the House, though, is her knack for creating controversy.

Since 2021, Lauren has made headlines for everything from being kicked out of a Beetlejuice performance for vaping to facing allegations that she punched her ex-husband in a Colorado restaurant. She’s also made racist comments about a fellow congressman, denounced the separation of church and state and made misleading claims about abortion, among others. Her children, however, have largely remained out of the spotlight.

So who are Lauren Boebert’s four boys? Here is everything to know about the congresswoman’s sons, Tyler, Brody, Kaydon and Roman.

Lauren and Jayson welcomed their first child, a son named Tyler, on March 21, 2005. At the time, Lauren was an 18-year-old senior at Rifle High School in Rifle, Colorado — but dropped out to focus on being a mother.

“I was a brand-new mom, and I had to make hard decisions on successfully raising my child, or getting to high school biology class. And I chose to take care of my child,” she told The Durango Herald in September 2020.

Lauren added, “I was starting my family and had different priorities.”

Tyler went on to follow in his mother’s footsteps, becoming a teen parent himself when he and his girlfriend welcomed a son named Josiah in April 2023. The birth made Lauren — who announced the pregnancy a month prior while speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Women’s Breakfast — a 36-year-old grandmother.

“I’m going to tell you all for the first time in a public setting, that not only am I a mom of four boys, but come April, I will be a [grandmother] to a brand-new grandson,” she said while accepting an award.

However, while Lauren dropped out of high school after having Tyler, she revealed to The Denver Post that Tyler intended to graduate from high school on time. She also shared in a March 2023 appearance on The Rubin Report that Tyler planned on taking petroleum engineering classes at Colorado Mountain College Rifle.

“I am just very proud of both of them for being responsible for their situation. This is a huge responsibility they are taking on. They made the right choice. Nothing was forced on them. This is a decision they made on their own,” Lauren told The Denver Post about Tyler and the child’s mother, who are not married.

She added, “He is very excited to be a father. My mom was 18 when she had me, which inspired me to be a mother when I was 18 years old.”

In February 2024, Tyler was arrested on felony charges related to alleged vehicle trespasses and property thefts. According to the Rifle Police Department in Colorado, the father-of-one is facing five felony counts and "over 15 additional misdemeanor and petty offenses." A spokesperson for the congresswoman did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Brody Boebert, 16

In the summer of 2007, Lauren and Jayson welcomed their second son, Brody. The Colorado congresswoman wrote about Brody’s birth in her memoir My American Life.

“With my first two sons, the doctor induced labor, and their delivery was drama-free,” she wrote about Tyler and Brody. “Brody was six pounds, 12 ounces. Thankfully, both were healthy, beautiful babies.”

Lauren also detailed in her memoir how she didn’t let her pregnancy with Brody — or his birth — keep her away from her job in the pipeline department of an energy company for long, only taking four weeks of parental leave.

Brody is an athlete, participating in both football and track and field in his hometown of Rifle. According to local meet recaps, Brody competes in hurdle and long jump events. Lauren has shared snippets of Brody’s athletics on her Instagram page, showing her second son “ready for spring football” in April 2021 and victorious after a track meet in May 2022.

Kaydon Cline Boebert, 14

Lauren and Jayson’s third son, Kaydon Cline, was born on July 12, 2009, in an unlikely location: The front seat of his father’s pick-up truck.

Lauren detailed the wild delivery story to the local newspaper Vail Daily, describing how her labor began in the middle of the night. Within an hour, her contractions were strong enough to send her and Jayson off to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, in Jayson’s work truck. But minutes into the drive, Lauren’s water broke — and the baby’s head was out.

“I was just trying not to panic,” she told Vail Daily at the time. “I was really scared, but I knew I couldn’t be. My body kept pushing, and I couldn’t stop.”

Lauren continued, “I caught him and pulled him up to my chest, and told Jayson to just keep going.”

Kaydon’s birth wasn’t the only time he made headlines, however. In May 2023, Lauren claimed during a meeting of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability that having her third child was cheaper than birth control.

“I left a prescription at a pharmacy once,” Lauren commented. “I went to get birth control, and I was there at the counter and went to pay for it, and the price was very, very high ... I said, ‘It’s cheaper to have a kid,’ and I left it there. And now I have my third son Kaydon Boebert. And so, actually, it turned out to be a really great thing.”

Beyond that media attention, Kaydon’s life is primarily out of the spotlight. Lauren will occasionally post about her third son on social media, sharing photos of Kaydon playing basketball and baseball on her Facebook account.

Roman Boebert, 11

Lauren and Jayson’s fourth and youngest son is Roman. According to her website, he is currently 11 years old.

All of Lauren’s children were born in Colorado, but her youngest son was the only child she elected to have a home birth with. She described the birthing experience in her memoir, My American Life.

“Roman’s delivery turned out to be an amazing life experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything,” she wrote.

Lauren went on to detail how Jayson, her mother and mother-in-law, and two of her sons, Tyler and Kaydon, were all present for and witnessed Roman’s birth.

“It was an absolutely beautiful moment,” she wrote. “I was surrounded by the people I loved, sharing one of life’s miracles in the comfort of my own home.”

However, little is known about Roman’s childhood beyond his birth story. Outside of family photos, he does not appear on Lauren’s social media accounts. In November 2022, though, a 10-year-old Roman appeared alongside his parents as Jayson cast his ballot in Lauren’s narrowly-won reelection.
