Lauren Boebert Apologizes for Behavior at 'Beetlejuice' Show in Denver: 'I Regret That'

The Republican congresswoman was reportedly kicked out of the show for causing a disturbance

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert has issued an apology for her behavior during a Denver performance of Beetlejuice, which resulted in her being removed from the theater.

The statement provided to the Associated Press and other outlets comes days after the Republican congresswoman confirmed some details of local media reports about her behavior at the event, and after a spokesperson previously disputed reports that she had been vaping.

"The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I'm truly sorry for the unwanted attention my Sunday evening in Denver has brought to the community," Boebert said, per the Colorado Sun. "While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that night were intended to be malicious or meant to cause harm, the reality is they did and I regret that."

Boebert added that she fell "short of my values" at the Buell Theatre during the production, and mentioned her "public and difficult divorce," which she said had been a "challenging personal time for me and my entire family."

A spokesperson for Boebert did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Security footage from the event shows the politician seemingly vaping and ignoring someone behind her trying to speak with her. She could also be seen apparently taking flash photos with her phone and dancing during the production.

"Whether it was the excitement of seeing a much-anticipated production or the natural anxiety of being in a new environment, I genuinely did not recall vaping that evening when I discussed the night's events with my campaign team while confirming my enthusiasm for the musical," Boebert continued in her statement, adding that she understands "the nature of how this looks."

“Regardless of my belief, it’s clear now that was not accurate," she then noted. "It was not my or my campaign’s intention to mislead, but we do understand the nature of how this looks. We know we will have to work to earn your trust back and it may not happen overnight, but we will do it.”

The Denver Post initially reported this week that Boebert was escorted out of the venue following the "disturbance," citing an incident report filed with the venue. Denver Arts & Venues also noted that she and another person were asked to leave after they were issued a warning when three people complained.

A pregnant woman told the Post that she asked Boebert to stop vaping and that the politician refused.

After initial reports, Boebert wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she "did thoroughly enjoy the AMAZING Beetlejuice at the Buell Theatre and I plead guilty to laughing and singing too loud."

"Everyone should go see it if you get the chance this week and please let me know how it ends!" she added.

A spokesperson at the time disputed reports that she had been vaping inside the theater, referencing fog machines and noting that they "believe it was a misunderstanding from someone sitting near her."

The Post also reported that Boebert and her companion refused to leave, and reportedly encouraged ushers to "go get" the Denver Police.

The recently released security footage showed the duo being escorted out of the venue as the politician pointed her finger at the usher.
