Laura Dern Has Something In Common With Carrie Fisher

You wouldn't think actress Laura Dern have much in common with Carrie Fisher— but surprisingly they do. Both women grew up in famous families. Dern learned to act alongside her mother, Diane Ladd. Fisher’s mother was Debbie Reynolds, of "Singing in the Rain,"among many, many others.

Both of these women had famous, less involved fathers as well. Fisher was a loud, abrasive comedian while Dern was more serious. Plus, both actresses did star in a Star Wars film together in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

Carrie Fisher Wrote Books Exploring The Darker Side of Herself and Hollywood

Besides being a successful actress, Carrie Fisher was also an author. She wrote multiple books exploring the darker side of herself and the ugliest side of Hollywood involving sexual harassment. She struggled with addiction and mental health issues most of her life. She was known for bringing humor to uncomfortable situations and would always include a punchline at the end of every tale.

Fisher used her sense of humor as a coping mechanism. Dern does the same thing but doesn't have the same reputation.

Laura Dern calls Carrie Fisher "an icon." The two met in 2016 before Fisher passed away on the set of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." Fisher reprised her role as Leia Organa, and Dern plays Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, a fellow female rebel leader. The character Dern played had a complicated relationship with Leia. The two characters were life-long friends and had a history off-screen before the events of the film, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

Dern is best known for her role in David Lynch's "Wild at Heart" alongside Nicolas Cage. She has called working on the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" "The greatest experience of her life."

Fisher passed away in 2016 before the film was released. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, died a day later.

She’s worked on a few projects since then, and her most recent film put her next to another female icon, Meryl Streep.

In a recent New York Times interview, Dern named Streep as one of the actresses she most admires, along with Dern’s own mother and a few others.

Dern was cast in the new Little Women movie as "Marmee" alongside Meryl Streep. She has found a group of supportive women to work alongside her. The film opens in theaters on Christmas.

It turns out, that both women are survivors of Hollywood and used humor to get through the dark side of it.
