Laura Dern, Florence Pugh repeat 25-year-old Little Women Oscars matchup
The lineage of ladies who’ve brought Little Women to life always stand together, even when they’re competing against each other in the hunt for Academy Awards.
Upon Monday’s announcement of the 2020 Oscar nominations, Little Women costars Laura Dern and Florence Pugh both received notices from the Academy (Dern for her supporting performance in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, and Pugh in the same category for her work in Greta Gerwig’s big-screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel).
On Wednesday, Twitter user Matthew Stewart — a longtime Oscar prognosticator — noted in a popular tweet that the mother-daughter matchup (Dern costars in Little Women as Marmee, mother to the film’s central March sisters) recalls a similar occurrence that played out at the 1995 Oscars. Dern will compete against Pugh, who played her daughter in Gerwig’s film, in the Best Supporting Actress category, while, 25 years ago, Susan Sarandon (nominated that year for The Client) vied for the Best Actress Oscar against Winona Ryder, who portrayed her daughter in Gilliam Armstrong’s 1994 version of Little Women.

“That’s, like, deep and stuff!” one user wrote in response to Stewart’s tweet, while another added a GIF of Kylie Jenner saying: “I feel like this year is really about, like, the year of just realizing stuff.”
Neither Ryder nor Sarandon won the Oscar that year (Sarandon would go on to win the following year for Dead Man Walking), but Dern is heavily favored to win this year’s Best Supporting Actress prize over Pugh, Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Margot Robbie (Bombshell), and Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit).
The Oscars air Sunday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
