Women Rule 2023 Latin Grammy Awards: Full Winners List

Women were the big winners at the 2023 Latin Grammys in Seville, Spain, on Thursday night (Nov. 16), with Colombian superstars Karol G and Shakira tying with Mexico’s Natalia Lafourcade with three major awards each. The best new artist award also went to a woman, young singer/songwriter Joaquina.

Karol G took home the coveted album of the year award for her historic chart-topper Mañana Será Bonito, which became the first album ever by a Latin woman to top the Billboard 200. The set also won best urban album, and “TQG,” her collaboration with Shakira, won best urban/fusion performance.

Earlier in the evening, Karol G was celebratory when she took the best urban album award, saying, “How cool is it for a woman to win this?” By the end of the evening, when she won album of the year, she was in tears — the good kind. “This album changed my life, and it’s incredible that it’s changed the life of so many people,” she said, while also thanking her former label, Universal Music.

It was also an emotional night for Shakira, who on top of her win with Karol G for “TQG,” also won song of the year and best pop song along with Argentine DJ Bizarrap for their chart smash “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

Picking up two awards for “Sessions,” in Spain, was a big karma moment for the Colombian star, who left the country in the spring after splitting up with her longtime partner, Gerard Piqué.

“I dedicate this award to my sons, Milan and Sasha, because I’ve promised them I’ll be a happy mother,” said Shakira, who also sang “Sessions” with Bizarrap in one of the most enthralling performances of the evening. “As a friend said, there’s nothing in the past; we only remember the future.”

Earlier in the evening, Mexican singer/songwriter Natalia Lafourcade, who has won multiple Latin Grammys through the years, won best singer/songwriter album for De Todas Las Flores and best singer/songwriter song for the track of the same name. During the telecast, she also won record of the year for “De Todas Las Flores,” but wasn’t there to pick up her award, which was collected by her producer.

Venezuelan singer/songwriter Joaquina, who performs highly personal songs and has been opening shows for the likes of Juanes and Fonseca, broke down in tears as she collected her best new arist award. “I’ve been writing since I was 8 years old. … They told me I wouldn’t make it if I recorded my own songs, but here I am.”

Hitmaker Edgar Barrera, the lead nominee for the 2023 Latin Grammy Awards, also won three awards, for producer of the year, songwriter of the year and best regional song for “un X100to,” the Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera hit. He thanked the Academy “for opening up a space to those of us who are dedicated to writing songs but don’t sing them, who usually aren’t seen but once a year, show our face.”

In their first-ever foray outside the United States, the Latin Grammys fully embraced their host country, featuring several Spanish-leaning performances, and also presenting a decidedly elevated musical night. The tone was set in the pre-telecast ceremony by the lengthy multi-artist performance that opened that part of the awards. And later by Rosalía’s stunning opening performance during the telecast, where she paid homage to the late great Rocío Jurado with her own rendition of 1985’s “Se Nos Rompió El Amor,” a song about lost love, performed acoustically and backed by 21 guitars and 21 palmeros (or hand clappers) in a stark, dramatic setting.

Another Spanish great, Alejandro Sanz, performed his hit “Corazón Partío” backed by a group of Spanish dancers performing an intricate choreography of fans, and homage was paid to actor Antonio Banderas, who owns a musical theater in Southern Spain.

Other highlights of the evening included Rosalía’s ex, Rauw Alejandro, performing an innovatively staged medley of hits that began backstage and followed him to the stage, and Shakira’s riveting performance of both her “Sessions” with Bizarrap (who was also excellent alongside newcomer Milo J) and “Acróstico,” which featured pre-taped cameos of her children singing.

A surprise of the night was Argentina’s María Becerra, who didn’t win, but was riveting and powerful in her performance alongside Pablo Alborán, and then alone.

The always-impressive Laura Pausini, who was feted the night before as the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year, also performed a beautiful medley of hits before receiving her award from Karol G.

“I feel Latin in my way of thinking and feeling,” said Pausini, who’s Italian but who’s forged her career singing in both English and Spanish. “Today is the day when we show the world that our adoption is finally legal and that our hearts and souls will be forever together,” she added, hopefully putting to rest the debate of who can or cannot sing “Latin” music.

The Latin Grammys are airing on the Univision network, UniMás and Galavision.
