Latin AMAs Winners List: Enrique Iglesias & Nicky Jam Win Big at Inaugural Awards Show

Propelled by the success of “El Perdón,” the year’s biggest song, Enrique Iglesias and Nicky Jam were the top winners at the inaugural Latin American Music Awards, with Iglesias leading with five wins, including the coveted artist of the year and favorite male artist awards.

“El Perdón (Forgiveness),” Iglesias’ collaboration with Jam, won single of the year, song of the year, favorite collaboration and favorite streaming song, taking Iglesias to a total of five awards and Jam, the next top winning act, to three.

The new artist of the year award, a contest between Chiquis Rivera, J Balvin, Maluma and Remmy Valenzuela, was won by J Balvin, with fan voting ongoing throughout the actual awards show.

The first-ever Latin AMAs aired live Thursday (Oct. 8) on the Telemundo Network from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Winners were voted on by fans, following the tradition of the American Music Awards.

Other top winners of the evening included Daddy Yankee, who won favorite male artist-urban — a highly contested category that included Don Omar, Nicky Jam and Balvin — as well as favorite song-urban for his single “Sígueme y te Sigo.” Onstage, Yankee thanked his competitors — particularly Don Omar, his old foe and now friend with whom he’s going out on a highly anticipated tour beginning in December.

Also winning two awards each were Cuban duo Gente de Zona (for favorite duo or group-urban and favorite song-tropical for “La Gozadera”); regional Mexican star Julión Alvarez y su Norteño banda (for favorite duo or group-regional Mexican and favorite song-regional Mexican for “Y así fue”); and Ricky Martin, who won album of the year for A quien quiera escuchar and favorite song pop/rock for “La Mordidita.”

Other winners of the night included Demi Lovato for favorite crossover artist and Gloria Trevi for favorite female artist. Favorite male artist-regional Mexican went to rising star Luis Coronel, while Romeo Santos won favorite artist-tropical.

In keeping with its sense of new, the Latin AMAs featured a handful of premieres, including performances of new singles by Paulina Rubio, Trevi, Fonseca and Yandel with Lil Jon. Rubio and Trevi, who are both in their 40s, looked particularly stunning. Rubio performed wearing fishnet stockings and an elaborate corset, while Trevi went glam in a sequined gown, in keeping with the theme of her new album, El Amor.

Pairings and collaborations were also a highlight, and there were several featuring mainstream acts. Natalie La Rose performed with new Colombian rapper Kevin Roldan and De La Ghetto, while Yandel performed with Lil Jon. Yandel was also featured on “Bailame,” the new single by DJ Alex Sensation that also featured Shaggy. The show ended with a multi-star tribute to salsa icon Celia Cruz, who was feted by a group that included India, Maluma, Yuri and Aymee Nuviola and Jeimy Osorio, the two actresses that play Cruz in the upcoming series Celia. Producer Sergio George, who worked with Cruz in many albums, produced the tribute.
