How ‘The Last of Us’ can pull an ‘X-Files’ at 2024 Golden Globes

While “Succession” is predicted to dominate the strike-delayed 2023 Emmy Awards, there could be a different story entirely at the upcoming 2024 Golden Globes. Four of Gold Derby’s 11 Editors, those of us website staffers who agonize over awards year-round, predict HBO’s zombie show “The Last of Us” will instead win Best Drama Series. It wouldn’t be the first time a sci-fi program was given the top prize by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as paranormal drama “The X-Files” did it three times (1994, ’96 and ’97), setting a record at the time that has since been tied by “Mad Men” (2007, ’08 and ’09). And just last year, “Game of Thrones'” fantasy prequel “House of the Dragon” beat the odds to claim victory.
“The Last of Us” could even tie a Golden Globes record if its two main stars, Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, also claim victory in Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress, respectively. Only four times in Golden Globes history has a continuing drama won series, actor and actress all in the same night, and “The X-Files” was the only science-fiction program to do so when leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both prevailed. Based on the popular video game of the same name, “The Last of Us” is coming off a jaw-dropping haul of 24 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series and both lead actors. Due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the 2023 Emmys have been pushed back to January 15, 2024, so we’ll have to wait a few more months to see if the freshman apocalypse series can take down presumed front-runner “Succession,” which tops all other TV shows with 27 nominations for its fourth and final season.
Speaking of “Succession,” that HBO family drama also has a shot at winning the top three Golden Globes for series, actor and actress. But it notably has a few possible combinations in which to accomplish that feat. While Sarah Snook as Shiv is the only contender in the lead actress race, there are three likely lead actor nominees, according to our Golden Globe odds: category front-runner Kieran Culkin as Roman, 2021 winner Jeremy Strong as Kendall, and 2019 champ Brian Cox as Logan.
Right now at Gold Derby, “Succession” and “The Last of Us” take up the first two slots on our Best Drama Series predictions chart. The other potential nominees look to be Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show” and Netflix’s “The Diplomat.”
